Dementia Action Alliance

A message from Maggie Martin – Home Instead

I’m creating a Dementia Action Alliance in the Bagshot, Windlesham and Lightwater area, so I’m looking for people who would be interested in being involved.

First Meeting next week 28th February 2pm at The Three Mariners

The first steps are to create a steering group & then start to identify steps we could take to make the three villages more dementia friendly. This is likely to include things like:

–          Information on local dementia services

–          Improved signs

–          Dementia Friendly services at the churches

–          Hairdresser / GP / Dentist appointments at quiet times

–          … anything else we can think of

I’m also planning to run Dementia Friends sessions in the area to help raise awareness in the local community. The sessions were developed by the Alzheimer’s Society & take about 45 minutes to run (they’re free).

Would you be interested or can you think of anyone else who would be interested either in joining the steering group or in hosting a Dementia Friends session ? The steering group isn’t going to be a huge commitment – probably just an hour or so a month.

A30-Camberley Public Consultation on Highways Improvements

Surrey County Council is consulting on proposals for highway improvements to the A30 and Camberley Town Centre including potential changes to the A30 bus lane.

The consultation is open until Sunday 9 April 2017 and during this period we are inviting the public, businesses and other organisations to find out more about the proposals online or at one of our public exhibitions.  It will be of particular interest to those who use the A30 at peak times or who regularly visit the Camberley Town Centre area. The proposed changes aim to reduce peak hour delays along the A30, maintain bus reliability and improve accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists on routes to and within Camberley town centre.

You can provide your feedback by completing a short questionnaire either online or at the exhibition.

Further information about the proposals, public exhibitions and the online questionnaire can be found at:  http://bit.ly/2dRrZyq

Surrey County Council staff will be present at all public exhibitions to help with questions about the proposals and consultation process:

Brush Party at The Cedar Tree

https://www.facebook.com/events/379715742404968/

cherry-blossom

Come to our Brush Party at The Cedar Tree, Bagshot on 2nd March and experience a great night out! It’s all about fun… get yourself a drink from the bar, settle down to your canvas and unleash your inner Van Gogh!

Our artist will walk you through creating your masterpiece. You’ll be delighted as your blank canvas transforms in only two hours, made all the better by a glass of wine or two!

You don’t need to bring anything apart from yourself… We provide everything… a 16” x 20” quality canvas, all the paint you need, brushes, aprons, music and the environment for you to have a great night out.

We are not sticklers, we are all for you mixing it up a bit… If you feel confident, you can interpret our instruction any way you wish… maybe you’d like to change the colours to suit your décor? We love it when you go ‘rogue’ – we might even learn a thing or two!

Please do note that your ticket price does not include food or drinks. Drinks can be purchased from the bar and food is also available up to 9pm.

The event starts at 7.00pm but please arrive at least 15 minutes early to get your seat and any drinks you may want etc. Our evenings usually last about 2 hours but times may vary.

Although we provide aprons, it might be worth wearing old clothes (just in case).

We look forward to seeing you for a great night out.

Please note: A Brush Party is not a traditional painting class. Music is played throughout the event.

Bagshot Village or Bagshot Town?

At the next SHBC Planning Meeting, the empty unit (yes, unit in the singular as that was the original plan) is to be discussed. However, since jobs are already being advertised for Pets At Home/ Vets4Pets, one does wonder if it is a fait accompli!

This development is called Bagshot Retail Park and is situated just outside of Bagshot ‘town’ centre. Sadly, in the coming months, we are saying ‘goodbye’ to at least two shops in the High Street and others are struggling. With Longacres at one of end of the village selling everything including the kitchen sink, and now this at the other end, we are losing our village identity.

You can still send in a letter or objection or support to SHBC – for more details see here.

Happy New Year and ‘Thank you’ to Bagshot Volunteers

thank-you

Bagshot is a fantastic place to live in and it is enhanced by the hours and hours given by various groups of volunteers, who often work unnoticed behind the scenes.

Without John and Nick, there would be no flags or Christmas Trees put in position on the buildings around the village.

Without the Bagshot Village Community Library volunteers – numerous in their number, the service would grind to a halt and we would lose our library facility.

Jo and David work very hard as our local Community Speed Watch Volunteers, and try to encourage as many drivers as possible, to slow down in our village.

Bagshot Society keep an eye on our local heritage and Bagshot Business Associate, work hard to keep the village centre shops and businesses attractive to residents, and organise High Street events to encourage visitors, and promote Bagshot as a great place to live and work.

Local schools, Windle Valley Day Centre, the local churches, local charities, Scouts, Guides, Cubs Brownies, Beavers and Rainbows, youth groups  and other organisations, all have small bands of volunteers who work tirelessly to help others to have a better quality of  life – to help, care, listen and do.

We here at Bagshot Community Events, try  hard to organise events, which brings all the groups together for ‘Special Royal Occasions’, Christmas Wishes, Owl Hunts/Halloween etc  and also communicate what is happening in the village , through Bagshot Events emails, Bagshot Village Facebook page and the Bagshot Village  webpage.

So, as 2016 comes to an end – ‘Bagshot Village’ wishes everyone a very happy 2017, but also says a very big ‘THANK YOU’ to all the Bagshot Volunteers, who make so many enjoyable things possible for the community at large.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Bagshot Chapel – Carol Service.

A very big thank you to everyone who came along this evening, to the Carol Service at Bagshot Chapel. We were lucky to have the Chapel and pathways illuminated by lights ‘borrowed’ from the M3 construction team, Colas Ltd. We also had lanterns illuminating the Wall and Garden of Remembrance and the 1914 – 2014 Memorial Garden.
It was a tad chilly – inside and out, but the congregation sang with gusto, and the children gave an endearing rendition of Away in a Manger – cue tissues! Special thanks to Rev Andreas from St Anne’s, who held things together beautifully, to John, our guitarist, Nick and Mel our readers and Eugenie, who told us the sad story of Emily Jane Popejoy.
At the end of the service, many gathered around Emily’s final resting place, where a special winter floral tribute was placed. Eugenie then told us about three gentlemen, also now at rest in Bagshot Cemetery, who fought in the First World War and how their actions gave us the freedom we all enjoy today.
and finally, we sang the first verse of Silent Night, remembering Emily and the three war heroes, but also all those family and friends who are no longer with us, but always in our hearts at Christmas time. ………    Sleep in Heavenly peace ….. Sleep in Heavenly peace
Thank you Bagshot,
Valerie and Tina x
