Bagshot Concert Band – would you like to join?

Our concert band Quite a few of you will have heard the Bagshot Concert Band playing at our recent Village Day. But how many know that the band has been in continuous existence (though under various names and with breaks during the two World Wars) since 1898, when it was founded by Messrs Chapman and Hickox? Though it’s unlikely that even the oldest residents can remember either of these gentlemen, they may feature in family histories – perhaps alongside the Duke of Connaught!, who was the band patron for about the first fifty years of its life. A concert band, sometimes called a military band, has woodwind as well as brass instruments together with percussion. You call a concert band a brass band at your peril! The band now has some thirty members and performs each summer at various venues – school sports days, park bandstands, flower shows and so on. And there is always a Christmas concert at All Saints church hall, Lightwater.

bandPlayers range in age from the teens to (almost) eighty, though as far as is known none lives in Bagshot! New players are always welcome. There are no auditions and potential members are welcome to come along to a practice in the Methodist church hall (beside Kwikfit) on a Friday evening at 8pm (but best to first contact Nigel, band chairman, on 01276 475207 as the band occasionally has engagements on Fridays). Also, look up Bagshot Concert band on the internet and you’ll find more details and see and hear the band in action – as you’ll be able to do at next year’s Village Day.

Roary the Lion to open Bagshot Village Day!!!

‘Roary’ (short for Recycling Organics And Refuse) will be on hand to open the Bagshot Village Day at 1pm on Sunday – he will be coming along to say hello to all the children and make sure that we leave the BPFA as we found it …… bin bags at the ready!!!! Roary will be around for most of the afternoon, so do say hello to him.

It is now countdown to an afternoon of fun and games. There are approximately 50 stalls and activities booked in, many of which, represent local charities and groups from the village. If you love a tombola, there are several to have a go at including the main one for the BPFA, who are kindly hosting the event for Bagshot Events. This will be their way of raising much needed funds to keep the pavilion up and running for the whole community to enjoy. It is run by a very small but dedicated committee and they are looking to start a Friends of the BPFA, so please visit their stall.

We will be entertained by Bagshot Concert Band, Bagshot Infant School (May Pole Dancing) Bagshot Ballet (doing a scene from Swan Lake), music from Mike Barrett of Bagshot and Toxic Sofa from Bracknell.

The order is as follows – subject to weather ……. times are approximate ……..

1.00 The event is officially opened by Roary the Lion and Councillor Valerie White
Followed by music from Mike Barrett.
1.30 Shimmy Cafe (Belly Dancers) will perform their first routine
1.45 Bagshot Concert Band
2.20 Bagshot Infant School and  Bagshot Ballet
followed by Shimmy Cafe second routine
Bagshot Concert Band
3.40 Music by Mike Barrett
4.00 Toxic Sofa
4.30 to end – summer music from whoever still has a voice!

Along with children’s rides, sweets and other goodies, there will be refreshments from ice cream to PImms, burgers to wraps and even some food and snacks with a Caribbean flavour …. and for the hard core, there will be coffee and cakes. There will be clothes and jewellery, smellies and sweeties, crafts and woodwork and lots of things to see and do! Waitrose staff from the new Bagshot store are also coming along to say ‘hello’ and maybe give out a few goodies.

If you do come by car, please park sensibly and make sure emergency vehicles have room to get past on the roads. There is limited parking at the pavilion itself, as we need to keep an area for our Blue Badge holders and those helping to put the day together. Emergency service vehicles also require a turning circle. so please take advise from those who are helping to keep the traffic moving.

Remember, this event is totally organised by volunteers, who do it because they love Bagshot and want everyone to have a happy and safe day. Please be patient if things go a bit wonky -timings may not be exact – things take a bit longer – and some stalls may not turn up, which is out of our control. Please come along and enjoy a community event organised by the community for the community……. and please please, let it be a dry day!!

Many thanks to everyone who has helped to put this day together. Kind regards Tina Carney

Bagshot Village Day 21st June 2015

poster for Village Day 2015

Dear all,
Please find attached a lovely poster for Bagshot Village Day. Please can you share it among friends and relatives and maybe make a copy and display it in your office or car.  There will be lots to do and see. Bagshot Infants are coming along to show us their wonderful dancing – along with Bagshot Ballet school! There will also be Shimmy Cafe , a local belly dancing troupe. Bagshot Concert Band are coming as well as other musicians to give a wonderful village day feel. The Cedar Tree are coming along to provide liquid refreshment of the alcoholic kind and Red Dot Cafe and The Coffee Bug will be coming along to provide other refreshments. There will be rides for the children, face painting and hopefully some henna tattoos. We have been promised cakes and sweetie stalls, candy floss and popcorn, tombola’s and Hook a Duck, craft and information stalls!   There are many charities who will be fundraising and promoting their work along with several of the local churches. There really will be something there for everyone including some pre Wimbledon tennis to watch!
We are asking that as many people as possible walk to the event or car share, as parking will be restricted at the pavilion itself. If you do bring the car, please park responsibly on the roads. Please do not block drives and make sure that emergency services are able to get up and down the road easily. It is also the rear entrance to Pennyhill Park and they still have delivery lorries on a Sunday – so move your wind mirrors in as College Ride and Church Road are very narrow in places.
Kind regards
Tina Carney

Bagshot Village Day Sunday 21st June 2015

Village Day 2015Sunday 21st June 2015 1pm – 5pm The BPFA Pavilion on College Ride GU19 5ET, will be the location for this year’s ‘Bagshot Village Day’, where the whole community comes together to enjoy a day of lovely activities for all the family….. and maybe treat Dad as it is also Father’s Day.

Bagshot Concert Band will be performing between 2pm and 4pm with an interval in the middle. Bagshot Ballet will be performing a special routine and we are hoping the weather will be good enough for our Belly Dancers to make an appearance.

There will be stalls from many local charities who would love to see your support. There are also some local businesses from the village moving up for the day to display their wares and services. We have also booked in rides for the children including bungee trampolines and small rides. There will be lots of stalls selling goodies and refreshments to enjoy. We will also be welcoming an ice cream cart courtesy of Frenchies in Camberley, and also a smoothy bar.

There is still space for more stalls and activities – so if you are interested send an email to events@bagshotvillage.com and details will be sent.  Charities, schools and churches are all able to have a free pitch and there are market stalls to hire as well. Keep an eye open for other things happening on the day. A warm welcome will be given to you from the BPFA, which has Bagshot Tennis Club and Bagshot Football Club as affiliated members as well as being the venue for many local groups.
