The need for additional traffic calming and HGV restrictions has been an ongoing saga for years, but is now on the ‘home straight’. The plan, which has been developed by SCC in conjunction with Windlesham Parish Council and local representatives (including from the Bagshot Society), will ban HGVs from using Bagshot as a rat-run to get between the A322 and the A30. It will also reduce the speed limit from 30 mph to 20 mph on Guildford Road, Bridge Road and many housing areas. The latest designs of ‘speed cushions’ and ‘raised tables’ will be used to discourage speeding.
Part of the process is yet more consultation. We encourage you to support the proposal and to respond positively to the consultation which you will find at https://bagshot-scheme.commonplace.is/en-GB/proposals/v3/have-your-say?step=step1 where you will find an overview of the proposals, links to documents giving the detail, a Q&A, and most importantly the means to respond. Closing date is 20 March.
We have tried to summarise the detail below.
- 7.5 tonne weight limits will be introduced at the junction of Bridge Road with the A30 and at the end of Guildford Road by the telephone exchange. Together with the existing ban on the High Street this means that HGVs will be banned (except for access) from those roads and the whole of Cedar Close / Waverley Road, Bagshot Green / Manor Way estate and the Freemantle Road / Gloucester Road estate.
- A 20 mph speed limit will be applied to the same roads as the HGV limit, plus Green Lane, Broomsquires Road and Elizabeth Avenue
- The Zebra crossings on Bridge Road and Guildford Road will be raised and the one on Bridge Road have its width reduced.
- Three sets of ‘Speed Cushions’ (not sleeping policemen) will placed along Guildford Road, and one on Bridge Road near what used to be called Queen Anne House.
- A speed survey in January 2024 showed that 50% of vehicles went at more than 30 mph on Guildford Road, as did 15% of vehicles on Bridge Road and Freemantle Road.
